He says shows like Roots and films like 12 Years a Slave, which won an Oscar for Best Picture in 2014 are given too much attention, despite the fact they "keep showing the abuse we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago".

The Roots remake stars Malachi Kirby as Kunta Kinte, along with Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin and rapper T.I.
The New York Times said of the remake: "In timing and spirit, this is a Black Lives Matter Roots, optimistic in focusing on its characters' strength, sober in recognizing that we may never stop needing reminders of whose lives matter."
Variety said "the timing couldn't be better" for the series, as "race is at the forefront of the national conversation".
"Kunta, Kizzy, George, and their descendants were slaves, but in Roots, they are never victims. Rather, they are folk heroes - and American originals."
