Snoop Dogg is calling for a Roots boycott, tired of going over history

Snoop Dogg has condemned the new Roots remake, saying it puts too much focus on the negatives.

The new miniseries has debuted to rave reviews in the US, but Snoop has taken to Instagram calling for a boycott.

"I'm sick of this s***," the rapper said.

"They going to just to keep beating that s*** into our heads about how they did us, huh?"

He says shows like Roots and films like 12 Years a Slave, which won an Oscar for Best Picture in 2014 are given too much attention, despite the fact they "keep showing the abuse we took hundreds and hundreds of years ago".

"I ain't watching that s***, and I advise you...f*** them television shows. Let's create our own s*** based on today, how we live and how we inspire people today. Black is what's real. F*** that old s***."

The Roots remake stars Malachi Kirby as Kunta Kinte, along with Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin and rapper T.I.

The New York Times said of the remake: "In timing and spirit, this is a Black Lives Matter Roots, optimistic in focusing on its characters' strength, sober in recognizing that we may never stop needing reminders of whose lives matter."

Variety said "the timing couldn't be better" for the series, as "race is at the forefront of the national conversation".

"Kunta, Kizzy, George, and their descendants were slaves, but in Roots, they are never victims. Rather, they are folk heroes - and American originals."
