Beauty in the bones
In the 1950s and 1960s, United States chiropractors held several beauty pageants where contestants were judged not only on their beauty but also on their standing posture. Said posture was checked by a number of methods: A plumb bob was used to check the straightness of
their backs, X-rays were used for examining their spinal structures, and two scales were used for evaluating their weight distribution. (A correct posture would result in the same reading on both scales.) The contests were a publicity stunt meant to boost the reputation of chiropractors. It was said that a good posture would lead to better health, and chiropractors were there to help with that. "Mr. Perfect Posture" contests were also held but weren't as popular and didn't last long. One day, my entire class was in the library for a seminar and we were milling around the room talking, laughing, being unruly (being typical teens, of course) and my mother kept trying to get our attention so we would take our seats. Flicking the lights on and off several times did not work, nor did approaching each small group asking us politely to find our chairs and be seated. Finally, she did what any respectable leader would do; She climbed up atop a table and yelled at the top of her lungs - 'MAY I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION PLEASE!?!' ... and proceeded to SNEEZE and FART simultaneously."
