Family's little update

Parents in the Philippines have named their newborn Hypertext Markup Language R. Pascual - HTML for short. The name was inspired by the father's web developer job. However, this naming convention is not new for the family, as other members also have unique names such as Sincerely, Macaroni, Spaghetti, and Cheese Pimiento.

Actor Ethan Hawke on the benefits of being creative. "Do you think human creativity matters? Well, hmm. Most people don't spend a lot of time thinking about poetry. Right? They have a life to live, and they're not really that concerned with Allen Ginsberg's poems or anybody's poems, until their father dies, they go to a funeral, you lose a child, somebody breaks your heart, they don't love you anymore, and all of a sudden, you're desperate for making sense out of this life, and, 'Has anybody ever felt this bad before? How did they come out of this cloud?' Or the inverse — something great. You meet somebody and your heart explodes. You love them so much you can't even see straight. You know, you're dizzy. 'Did anybody feel like this before? What is happening to me?' And that's when art's not a luxury, it's actually sustenance. We need it."

Bike-free cycleway?

Lloyd Carpenter writes: "Does anyone know if the Captain Scott cycleway users have been added to the endangered species list yet and whether we need to report any sightings to DoC?" The trial pop-up cycleway in Glen Eden, Auckland, will be monitored and evaluated using "success factors" and will help provide insight into the appetite for a cycleway in the area.

Around the time of its launch TV3 ran a competition to see who could come up with the most creative "3". Stu shared a yarn about a mate cutting a "3" in the roof of a brand new car and another reader remembers his win… "My wife and I baked a loaf of bread with the three logo inside it so when you cut it, there it was. We too won a 14-inch colour TV."

Big Brother watching online exam

Christine sat an external qualification exam for work. "It was very strict," she says.  "I had a camera watching me the whole time, had to show my entire room before and after the exam. I was on a laptop and was told to put a piece of material on my desktop screen. No way could I have cheated as they had someone watching me the whole hour. They can see if your eyes look elsewhere.  Not sure if this is how they do the uni exams but one example of it."
