Seventy-five years ago a huge group of soldiers and civilians slugged it out on the streets of Wellington during the Battle of Manners St - a clash between New Zealanders and American servicemen during World War II. The mass punch-up began after a small
minority of US servicemen from the southern states blocked Maori soldiers from buying a drink. They told them they could not ride in trams and could walk only in back streets. Belts and knives were used and 1000 troops were involved, plus a few hundred civilians. Two US soldiers were killed and many injured yet the headline in the paper the next day simply stated "Disturbance in Cuba St". Details of the brawl were hushed-up because allies coming to blows wasn't a good look. Between 15,000 and 45,000 American soldiers and sailors were based in New Zealand at the time, which led to a clash of cultures. Romantic liaisons developed between American troops and New Zealand women. New Zealand blokes, especially members of the armed services stationed overseas, deeply resented the popularity of these American "bedroom commandos".
What is your strictest personal rule?
1. When buying a new piece of technology, don't get the version with the lowest amount of storage. At the very least, pay the extra money to get the one with the next highest level of storage. Unless you want to continually micromanage the amount of space on your device.
2. I never text back when I'm upset. I tend to overreact and say things I don't mean if I reply right away, so I've learned to take some time to figure out exactly what's bothering me and why.
