'Sickening' moment at rapper's Auckland show

Lil Yachty has spent much of his short, colourful career trying to answer the question: "Is there such a thing as too lit?"

Last night, near the end of the 19-year-old rapper's punchy but shambolic set at Auckland's Powerstation, one fan answered that question for him.

The Atlanta rapper and his crew were celebrating the end of their show by dancing to Migos' hit Bad and Boujee. A fan stationed on the venue's upper deck saw this, and decided to get on Lil Yachty's level. Literally.

The overexcited punter climbed onto the second-storey balcony railing, flexed for a few moments, then launched himself off and into the outstretched hands of those in the moshpit below.

Well, that was the plan, but there weren't enough hands to catch him, leaving the flying fan belly flopping on to the floor.

The sickening thud led to gasps echoing around the venue. The music stopped and the star of the show and his entourage sprinted off stage and out of sight, leaving security to pick up the pieces and escort the stage diver outside.

Yes, that's probably the definition of "too lit". But it was a bruising end to a show that, when it had kicked off an hour early, started not with a bang, but with a whimper.

It wasn't the crowd's fault, with throngs of rowdy teens packing the venue to see Miles Parks McCollum in action for the first time. He's one of the year's break out rap stars thanks to the rebellious teen cacophony of his debut, Teenage Emotions.

But Yachty opened the show adrift, eyeballing the crowd, barking orders and trailing songs off, delivering the bass-powered sonics of DN Freestyle and Bentley Coupe in simple Snapchat-sized chunks.

It made for a disjointed, lacklustre first 15 minutes. At times, Yachty didn't seem to care, but at others, he was so fired up it hurt just to watch him bounce carelessly around the stage and throw himself into the front rows.

The turning point came during Dirty Mouth, when Yachty and a sidekick delivered the song's mumbled lyrics forehead-to-forehead, erupting in a frenzy of jumps and spin kicks.

Things only picked up from there, with the minimalist filth of Peek-a-Boo bleeding into the anthem Harley, and the summer jam Broccoli setting up the fitting finale of Forever Young.

It started as a shambles, but it ended as an event. Well, except for one punter who's probably nursing a few bruised ribs today.
