WAIT UNTIL DARK
Herald rating: * * * *
When Wait Until Dark first screened in theatres, all emergency lighting was extinguished during the final chilling scenes, sending audiences into a panic. Much of the film takes place in the confined area of a basement apartment, where Audrey Hepburn stars as Susy, a blind woman stalked and terrorised by criminals.
Susy's friend, Sam (Efrem Zimbalist jnr), is sent a doll which contains a stash of heroin. Villains Richard Crenna and Alan Arkin try to get the doll and Susy's sharpened sense of hearing tells her all is not as it seems beneath the pair's friendliness.
With such a vulnerable main character and the use of audio cues, it is reminiscent of a Hitchcock classic. Hepburn was nominated for an Academy Award for her role. Years later, Arkin was asked if he was surprised his performance was overlooked. His answer? "You don't get nominated for being mean to Audrey Hepburn." (1967)

BEYOND THE SEA
Herald rating: * * * *
Kevin Spacey plays Bobby Darin, who rose from sickness and poverty to become a major teen pop idol in the 1950s. Darin also enjoyed a movie career and married Sandra Dee before taking a left turn into folk music and relative obscurity. Plays out as a musical, but Spacey's performance is damn convincing. Plus, he wears a toupee. (2004)
