Ricky Gervais apologises in advance for his behaviour as Golden Globes host

Comedian Ricky Gervais is known for ruffling more than a few feathers, but he also knows when to apologise.

In this case, he's saying sorry in advance of his Golden Globe hosting duties next week, which have previously landed him in hot water.

Gervais posted a mock apology on Twitter at the weekend, writing: "Because I can see the future, I'd like to apologise now for the things I said at next week's Golden Globes. I was drunk & didn't give a f***."

The controversial funnyman played host for three consecutive years from 2010, but vowed his appearance in 2012 would be his last.

That was until his return to the stage was announced last October.

His previous attempts were met with mixed reaction, with some on social media claiming Gervais was the only reason they tuned in.

Others, however, felt his gags were beyond a joke.

The Office star angered people in 2010 when he made fun of Mel Gibson's drinking and Angelina Jolie's adopted family.

A year later, Robert Downey Jr labelled his Golden Globes appearance as "mean-spirited" with "mildly sinister" undertones.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler took the helm as co-hosts of the ceremony from 2013 to 2015, making waves of their own.

Gervais has given no indication as to what form his jokes will take on the night, but has been dropping hints on Twitter that they will certainly be up to his usual controversial standard.

The 73rd Golden Globes will air live on Vibe on Monday from 2pm.
