Review: Far Cry 5 is peak Far Cry

In Far Cry 5, gamers play a sheriff taking on a cult in Hope County, Montana.

I tried to help him. I really did. The man was about to be executed by two armed and angry alt-right cult followers on the side of the road.

I pulled over, got my good Samaritan on, took out the fascists and cut the guy free.

After all, as a rookie sheriff, your job in Far Cry 5 is to free Hope County from the tyrannical grip of cult leader Joseph Seed. These guys were definitely part of his cult.

The victim got up, thanked me and ran off. I waved goodbye only to watch him get attacked by a cougar. As I helped him recover, we were ambushed by more of Seed's followers, including a madman armed with a flamethrower.

This time, they got him for good.

Your first takeaway from this exchange is that some people just can't be helped. Your second takeaway is that in Far Cry 5, you will get shot at a lot.

You'll also get mauled, bombed, driven off the road, attacked by hawks, bitten by wolves, blown apart by explosives and, if that guy with the flamethrower gets too close to you, burnt alive.

Death is all around you in Hope County, Montana, the setting for the fifth game in Far Cry's wayward series, and follow-up to 2016's subpar side-offering Far Cry Primal.

It's there in the massacres around religious symbols you'll stumble across in a forest. It's there in the bodies strung up as offerings to whichever god Seed is worshipping.

And it's there in all of Seed's followers you're forced to take down on your way towards freeing Hope County, like the "Angels" high on their drug of choice, Bliss.

Bliss? If you're a Far Cry fan, Far Cry 5 will make you feel like Far Cry has peaked, with its terrifically tense introduction, incredible graphics, constant kill rate, and generous content inclusion, with enough side missions to have you playing for weeks, if not months.

It's a pure adrenaline blast of big dumb fun. But where the series can go from here is anyone's guess. Is the moon available?
