Celebrities have taken to Twitter to celebrate the axing of ABC's Roseanne revival after the star posted a racist remark about Valerie Jarrett, one of former President Barack Obama's closest advisers.
In the now-deleted tweet, she called Jarrett the offspring of the "Muslim Brotherhood & Planet of the Apes". Shelater tweeted that she was "truly sorry for making a bad joke" and was leaving Twitter.
Despite the apology, ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey announced the network was cancelling the show: "Roseanne's Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values".
Many stars - some of whom were among the voices calling for the show to be canned - have supported the network's decision, including Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes and Viola Davis.
Some joked that Fox was likely to pick up the series.
But most thanked Dungey for her swift and decisive action, and her contribution towards a "more inclusive" society.
For the record, this is Channing Dungey. Sitting on top of your world like a Queen in full judgement of your garbage and taking it out. #Roseannepic.twitter.com/GxEP2B61uq
But honestly she got what she deserved. As I tell my 4 year old, one makes a choice with one’s actions. Roseanne made a choice. A racist one. ABC made a choice. A human one.
I just heard #rosanne is cancelled. My reaction— tears. I am so relieved and grateful. The hate that has been spewing from those in Trump’s orbit has really taken a toll on all of our souls and psyches. I didn’t believe it would happen. I had lost faith. Thank you @abc .
I’m glad that @ABCNetwork took a stand. We as a country can and will be better. More welcoming, more inclusive. We reach so many people in the entertainment industry. We can be a voice for good.
We can, and will, become once again that beacon on a hill. ✨
Roseanne has made her fortune off the backs of the working class with mean spirited vulgarity. Thank God they cancelled her trash. Feel bad for all the other actors and crew who lost their jobs too. https://t.co/SrhV6HnSym
I’m rarely SHOCKED by anything these days. But @ABCNetwork canceling @RoseanneOnABC got me. They looked past money and did what was right. Good for them.
