Pippa was right, it's another baby girl

It's just as well Breakfast host Pippa Wetzell is used to waking up early - her baby daughter was born at five o'clock yesterday morning.

Cameron Jade, Wetzell's second daughter with husband Torrin Crowther, was born weighing 8lb 9oz (4kg). Wetzell, 32, said the birth "went well". She had chosen not to find out the gender of her baby in advance.

"It was a lovely surprise," she said yesterday afternoon. "We're doing very well."

Wetzell and Crowther, a lawyer, also have a 3-year-old daughter named Brodie.

Breakfast co-host Paul Henry said Wetzell had suspected that she was carrying a girl.

"I saw her about four or five days ago and we had coffee together," he said. "She said then she was pretty sure it was a girl."

Henry, as always, had an opinion of his own: "I always felt it was going to be a girl."

Although A-list actress Cameron Diaz had made the name as acceptable for girls as well as boys, Henry thought people might assume Wetzell's new arrival was male.

"It's a great name, but is it a boy's name, I wonder?" he mused.

"They've got Brodie and Cameron, and if you didn't know them you might think they had two boys."

The TV host's mother Carol, a real estate agent, said she was "delighted" at the new arrival.

Wetzell has been on maternity leave for four weeks, and is due to return to the morning TV show in October. Alison Mau is keeping her seat warm on the Breakfast couch.

The well-liked Wetzell - once described as "the thinking man's piece of crumpet" - landed the role in August 2007 after former co-host Kay Gregory resigned. The former One News reporter had been a back-up presenter to Gregory before her appointment.

Last night, TVNZ news and current affairs boss Anthony Flannery added the broadcaster's voice to the congratulations.

"I'm stoked about the safe arrival of little Cameron and would like to pass on TVNZ's very best wishes to Pippa and Torrin," he said.

"Pippa plans to return to Breakfast later this year and, while we look forward to that, we also want her to take all the time she can to hang out with her little girls. It's such precious time that passes so quickly.

"I'm sure there will be many viewers wanting to pass on their congratulations and they are welcome to send them to us at TVNZ or the Herald on Sunday."
