The latest Hollywood trend of turning random brands into movies is proving unstoppable, with possible the strangest entry yet joining a growing list of films no one asked for.
Following announcements that properties as far reaching and strange as Monopoly, Hello Kitty and emojis will be receiving big-screen adaptations, PEZdispensers has been decided as the latest product to have untapped movie potential.
It was announced this morning that production company Envision Media Arts has signed a deal with PEZ Candy Inc. to make an animated movie based somehow around the brand.
"PEZ Candy is beloved by children and adults alike. With Cameron Fay we've created a world unique to Pez and a story that will touch the hearts of many," said EMA CEO Lee Nelson.
What that unique, heart-warming world is has not been revealed yet, as there is no plot, character or casting details to go on, nor even a release date.
PEZ is mostly known for its dispensers, which come in different designs based on the heads of notable pop culture characters and celebrities. It was created in 1927 in Austria, and now sells 3 billion 'candy bricks' annually in the US alone.
Screenwriter Cameron Fay has signed on to write the movie. Nothing of his has been released yet, but he will be writing a Three Stooges reboot set for 2017.
According to SlashFilm, EMA has only produced or financed five movies in the past five years. This would be their biggest film yet.
