Previously, TV3 presenters Sam Hayes and Janika ter Ellen had been tipped to join Henry but were both assigned new roles within the Mediaworks stable - with Hayes taking over Henry's late night slot and ter Ellen moving to Prime as the weekend news anchor.
Henry's return to breakfast television after four years away is being closely monitored by industry figures.
He left TV One's Breakfast after a storm of controversy including poking fun at the name of the then Delhi chief minister, Sheila Dikshit.
Since then he briefly moved to Australia to co-host the morning show Breakfast on Channel 10 that lasted nine months before it was cancelled, and hosted a late night daily news show - also called The Paul Henry Show - on TV3.
His move to morning news has prompted other changes, including Henry's former late night co-presenter Janika ter Ellen moving to Prime News, while reporter Rebecca Wright has moved to TV One.
