Australian singer/songwriter Steve Kilbey (above left) of the Church and his music-making mate Ricky Maymi of infamous San Francisco band the Brian Jonestown Massacre (BJM) are teaming up for a New Zealand tour starting in July.
Along with their band, they will play reinterpretations of Church and Kilbey solomaterial, plus songs from the pair's upcoming collaboration album The Wilderness Years by David Neil which is out next month.
It has been a busy couple of years for both. Kilbey toured with the Church for their 30th Anniversary Acoustic Tour, and the band were inducted in the Australian Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame; and Maymi, who was a founding member of BJM along with leader Anton Newcombe, has toured almost constantly, including playing New Zealand in 2008 and 2010.
The pair play five dates including Auckland's Kings Arms on July 28 and the Cabana in Napier on August 1.
In support is Kurt Shanks (ex-Stellar*) and his band previewing songs from his upcoming EP Seven Flights Up. Tickets on sale June 13 at Ticketmaster.co.nz, Real Groovy (Auckland), Music Machine (Napier) and Marbecks.
Meanwhile, the good old boys from Six60, the dub, roots and drum 'n' bass band best known for crossover hit Rise Up 2.0, are touring in July.
They are currently on a hiatus from gigging to record their debut album with producer Tiki Taane which will be released later this year.
But they're getting itchy feet and on the very last day of their scheduled recording time they plan to head out for a short run of
shows starting in Christchurch on July 15, before heading to the North Island to play Hamilton's Altitude on July 29 and Massey University in Palmerston North on July 30.
