Meryl Streep is set to grill her off-screen friend Nicole Kidman in the next instalment of Big Little Lies.

The Season 2 trailer, just released by HBO, gives fans a taste of how the Oscar-winning actress plans to get to the bottom the cliffhanger death at the end of its first season.

The network revealed in 2018 that Streep would join the cast as Mary Louise, a grandmother looking for answers, reports news.com.au.

Now the D-Day has arrived and Nicole Kidman's character Celeste is the one bearing the brunt of her month-in-law's interrogation about the death of her abusive husband Perry.

"You don't believe my son just slipped," Streep's character Mary Louise said in the trailer.

"My son is dead and I want answers."

"I gave you answers," Kidman's character Celeste relied.

In the same vein as many of the powerful roles Streep has played in the past, she doesn't back down.

"Yes, but you left things out, didn't you?" she questioned.

"You were planning to leave him. And you learned of his infidelity just ten seconds before he died."

"Oh, you left that out, too," she adds in the final moment before the trailer ends.

While Steep steals the show, the new Season 2 trailer isn't all about her and her on-screen daughter-in-law.

It is also about the guilt felt by the Monterey Five.

"It's gonna get us, it's gonna get us all," Bonnie (Zoë Kravitz) said to Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) earlier in the trailer.

"Who are you talking about?" Madeline replied.

"The lie," replied Bonnie.

That lie is the one told to cover-up the suspicious death of Celeste's husband Perry (played by Alexander Skarsgård).

In a flashback to Season 1, the trailer shows Bonnie pushing Perry down the set of stairs to his death.

Fans will have to wait a few weeks to get more of the story.
