Doctor Who fans were on cloud nine today as they were treated to a teaser of the 11th series.

The 40-second clip aired during half time during today's World Cup final, and gave a glimpse of the new doctor, Jodie Whittaker - the first woman to play the role.

At the end of the clip, the words "The universe is calling," can be seen before Jodie materialises and smiles.

In a section of the clip, Tosin Cole, one of the stars of the show, is in a cafe eating egg, beans and toast, watching football on his phone. Crockery and condiments can be seen shaking on another table in the cafe.

Sharing it on Twitter, the show's official page wrote: "New Doctor Who, New friends, New Adventures. #DoctorWho."

Twitter users responded to to the teaser of the new Dr Who season.

@robinisreal said: "Loving it. No major plot points revealed, no spoilers, just intrigue."

@Calan_levis said: "Really looking forward to seeing the trailer now. The teaser has got me so excited."

But many people were disappointed at the length of the trailer.

Richard Voisey said: "That was pathetic. :-( NOT a proper trailer at all, guess Comic Con will be getting that after all. :-("

The clip also features various people watching the match, wisps of electric light are seen running through the air and appearing to rewind time.

Mandip Gill and Bradley Walsh, The Doctor's companions in the show, were also seen in the trailer.

In June, a clip featuring Jodie Whittaker's first scenes as the female Doctor was leaked on Twitter, four months before its return in October.

Fan reacted by condemn the guilty party for trying to kill the anticipation of seeing the Thirteenth Doctor in action.

The 11th series of Doctor Who will be premiering later this year.
