Clark Kent's glasses disguise has always been a little hard to believe.

But Superman actor Henry Cavill has proven the Man Of Steel's trick is not entirely ineffective.

In a video posted to his Instagram on Thursday morning (AEDT), Cavill walks around unrecognised in New York's Times Square - despite the giant Batman V Superman movie posters surrounding him.

Cavill can be seen smiling wryly as he stands incognito in front of a subway entrance, in the middle of the square and in a coffee shop.

He even wore a Superman t-shirt to prove his point."Dear Doubter, The glasses are good enough. Regards, Superman," he wrote to his 492,000 followers.

Fans responded with glee to the prank.
