"FOUR" was the tweet that said it all.

Lorde, the chart-topping 17-year-old pop queen from Takapuna, gave her 638,400 Twitter followers the good news she had been nominated for a total of four Grammy Awards.

Ella Yelich-O'Connor's smash hit Royals was nominated for the coveted Song of the Year award.

She'll come up against some of the biggest names in popular music, such as Pink, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars.

Royals - which spent nine weeks at the top of the Billboard charts - was also nominated for Record of the Year, and best pop solo performance.

Lorde's debut album, Pure Heroine, was also nominated for best pop vocal album, but Lorde missed out on a Best New Artist nomination.

Her co-writer and production partner Joel Little tweeted: "A song that Ella & I made to give away for free just got nominated for 3 Grammys, & the album got one too. Whaat. So proud of @lordemusic."

The Grammy Awards are on January 26, which clashes with a Lorde performance due at Auckland's Laneway Festival. She's expected to skip the home crowd to attend music's glamour event.
