Rising local musical stars are regularly filmed live at York St studios for the Sundae Sessions series hosted by nzherald.co.nz entertainment editor Hugh Sundae. Here's a run-down on the latest act.
Who: Tom Lark
From: Christchurch, most now residing in Auckland.
Line-up: Cousins Shannon Fowler (songwriter, lead vocals, guitar) andDaniel Fowler (drums), brothers Jono Perkins (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Mark Perkins (keys, backing vocals), Guy Cowan (bass, kazoo).
Where they're at: Released singles and six-track Tom Lark EP last November. Went to Berlin this year so Simon Berkfinger (Feelings) could produce debut album. Unsigned but manager Matt Coleman says they're considering offers; album likely early next year. This week performing at the CMJ Music Marathon in New York.
What they sound like: "Sparklehorse-esque pop", says Hugh. "I often recorded late at night," explains Shannon. "Because my flatmates were asleep this meant a lot of the other sounds and vocals took on a softer, dreamy vibe."
What they're playing in the Sundae Sessions: They were down for nine but audience insisted on an encore. Mix of the EP, singles and that unreleased album.
Hugh's highlights: "I booked them based on hearing a couple of the more well-known singles but I also really enjoyed a couple of the less rowdy reworked EP tracks - particularly first song Shy Child."
