New Zealand short film Blue has won a top critics' prize at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

Directed by Stephen Kang, it was named the 50th Semaine De La Critique Grand Prix Canal + Du Meilleur Court Metrage Best Short Film.

It tells the story of a former children's television show alien mascot who struggles to hold down a job at an Asian restaurant.

Critics' Week is a parallel section of the famous Cannes festival for first or second-time filmmakers and has a special section dedicated to short films.

The New Zealand Film Commission today congratulated Kang and his team, saying the award was a huge honour and validation of his directing talent.
