Fix up and look sharp. Many in Auckland will be digging out their coolest garments as it's Fashion Week time again. Air New Zealand Fashion Week takes place in the Viaduct Harbour next week. The general public can attend the following weekend and enjoy selected shows and shop in a designer garage sale.

FESTIVAL
The Auckland Heritage Festival kicks off with a special moment in downtown Auckland. From 6.30pm on Friday the public can head to Quay St's red fence and view a dramatic display of historical Auckland maritime footage projected on to the front of Shed 10, Queens Wharf. ROCK
Hard-rocking Australian band Karnivool storm into town this week for a gig at the Kings Arms. If you like your rock progressive and loud, this is for you. The Perth-based band tour Australia extensively, but this is a rare trip across the ditch. The five-piece will be supported by local rockers Battle Circus and These Four Walls.

THEATRE
Before Oliver Driver was TV3's man in the morning on Sunrise, he had extensive experience as an actor and director on stage and screen. From tomorrow he leads the star-studded cast of Ruben Guthrie, a play produced by Auckland's Silo Theatre. It's a tale of an alcohol-swilling ad agency creative director living the high life, until one night something doesn't quite go to plan.

Fans of 90s indie heroes Pavement will be salivating at the prospect of one of the band's key members returning to play a show this Friday at the King's Arms. Stephen Malkmus and his band The Jicks are in New Zealand for the first time since 2001, and play with support from legendary local Flying Nun band The Verlaines.

OPERA
Described as "a Russian Pride and Prejudice without the happy ending", the new season of Eugene Onegin, the opera, opens tonight at Auckland's Aotea Centre. The opera is set in Russia and sung in Russian with English surtitles, there is no shortage of drama in this, with love, honour, death just some of the major themes. Stars William Dazeley and Anna Leese are accompanied by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.

Shorecore poster boys The Checks are riding high with a new album out and plenty of gigs on the go. You can catch them tonight in Parnell at the Juice Bar, a venue run by music TV channel Juice TV. Next time you are in Parnell check it out - it's steadily becoming a reliable spot to catch quality local bands and singer-songwriters.

So many Kiwi musicians got their first chance to play to big crowds through the Smokefree Rockquest, everyone from Boh Runga to The Electric Confectionaires has taken part in the high school band competition over the years. This Saturday is the national final, with bands coming from as far as Timaru to compete. It's hosted by C4's Drew Neemia and Dave Gibson of Elemeno P.
