Artist Alicia Frankovich has been selected to take up Creative New Zealand's 2016 visual arts residency at the ISCP (International Studio and Curatorial Program) in New York.
Her latest exhibition, The Female has Undergone Several Manifestations, opened yesterday at Auckland's Starkwhite Gallery. She will discuss her work with Artspace directorMisal Adnan Yildiz on Monday.
A graduate of Auckland University of Technology, Frankovich has exhibited in New Zealand and internationally and has undertaken several residencies, including the Creative New Zealand Visual Arts residency at the Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin in 2010.
She is well known for her live performances and sculptural and video presentations, including Floor Resistance in the 2012 Walters Prize exhibition; Free Time at the Palais de Tokyo, Paris in 2013; and a large-scale exhibition of sculptures at Complex Bodies, Gebert Stiftung fur Kultur, Switzerland, last year.
Her project for the residency will examine people in the urban spaces of Brooklyn, as they navigate their work and life around the city. "In my artworks, people are a very particular part of the work and the diverse Brooklyn community will be a focus for my project for this residency. The cultural understanding of the United States is very specific and this is what I will draw on," she says.
Her exhibition at Starkwhite is produced alongside Artspace's The Bill, a programme of research-based exhibitions and events curated by Yildiz, marking the 30th anniversary of the Homosexual Law Reform Act in Aotearoa 1986.
