Netflix data reveals Kiwis' quiet Easter in, 331-day film habit

Turns out Kiwis love their TV - so much so that when we finally got a four-day weekend, we spent the first of those days indoors watching Netflix.

While many of us took off for a long weekend away this Easter, a good portion of us kicked it off by watching tele, according to Netflix, whose Year In Review reveals our most popular day of streaming was Good Friday.

The review has pulled trends from survey and viewing data in an aim to illustrate not just what Kiwis have been watching, but how they've been watching it.

For example: Someone in the country watched the Adam Sandler comedy flick Grown Ups a massive 331 times this year - that's nearly once every day. The film just a 10 per cent approval rating on Metacritic.

It also reveals New Zealand's most watched shows, which include the new Stranger Things series, the hugely controversial 13 Reasons Why and hit comedy Orange Is the New Black.

We're also suckers for a nostalgic throwback, with Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life and Fuller House featuring heavily on our watch-lists.

Our most binge-worthy shows - shows which we spent more than two hours a day watching - include those mentioned earlier, but our top three come as more of a surprise.

In at number one is Mexican political drama Ingobernable, followed by Oprah Winfrey's drama Greenleaf and true-crime satire American Vandal.

But the most interesting insight comes from a survey of 60,000 Netflix members from around the world who watch TV as a couple.

It shows the top three shows we watched together were Stranger Things, 13 Reasons Why and A Series of Unfortunate Events as well as the more nostalgic offerings.

However, our top three most cheat-worthy shows - the ones we skipped ahead of our partners on - also included Stranger Things and 13 Reasons.

So while we start off with good intentions, the desire to get to the end as fast as possible ultimately wins over - this is what Netflix has dubbed "binge-racing".

And our most binge-raced series will come as no surprise; Stranger Things. Possibly because it combines the best bits of all of our most-streamed shows - comedy, sci-fi, drama, nostalgia and talkability - in one.

Now we just have to figure out what it is about Grown Ups that made someone watch it nearly every day this year.
