Netflix has made the controversial decision to axe hit series Boots after one season and two months after it premiered on the streaming platform.
The eight-episode, coming-of-age drama comedy produced by Norman Lear (his last project before dying in 2023 aged 101), will not progress to a second series, asreported by Deadline.
While getting it to the small screen was met with some challenges, including a shutdown in production because of Hollywood strikes, the series premiered on October 9 and was well received by critics and viewers, receiving a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
It averaged 9.4 million views in its first full week and sat in the platform’s top 10 for four weeks, but the cult following wasn’t enough for the streaming giant.
Needless to say, the cancellation has been met with some negativity online, with fans slamming the streaming platform for axing the series.
“One of the biggest reasons why Netflix is in the gutter is because they never let shows find audiences now. They just cut them before they even get the chance,” one person wrote on X.

“Netflix needs to start giving shows a chance and release one episode a week so the hype and viewership continues,” another agreed.
Another chimed in with: “Nothing surprises me after Netflix cancelled Deadboy Detectives after one season, but I could’ve sworn Boots was really popular this year and was trending forever on Twitter.”
The news comes almost two months after US President Donald Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth delivered a controversial address to a room full of the military’s top commanders, calling for an end to “woke” culture followed by the United States Pentagon issuing a statement accusing Netflix of spreading “ideological agenda”.
“Under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth, the US military is getting back to restoring the warrior ethos. Our standards across the board are elite, uniform, and sex neutral because the weight of a rucksack or a human being doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight,” Pentagon press secretary Kingsley Wilson said in a statement given to Entertainment Weekly, adding administration “will not compromise our standards to satisfy an ideological agenda, unlike Netflix whose leadership consistently produces and feeds woke garbage to their audience and children”.
Boots follows the story of Cameron Cope (Miles Heizer) joining his best friend in training for the US Marines.
The story is based on the memoir of former US Marine Greg Cope White, The Pink Marine, during the 90s – a time when being gay in the marine corps was considered illegal.
