In this Herald on Sunday series, we ask well-known Aucklanders for their favourite spots in the city. This week, actor Brit O’Rourke takes us on a tour of her top places.

Favourite beach?

Point Chevalier. A classic. But it’s my sweet escape, close enough to squeeze into a work day if you’re in the city centre. There is a rock shelf behind Coyle Park, that at low tide is a lovely private spot to hide from the busy.

Brunch spot?

Besides my favourite brunch options made by my flatmate (a chef by profession), Burnt Butter Diner in Avondale is so good. The chilli fried eggs are incredible.

Best restaurant for dinner with friends?

Gemmayze Street on Karangahape Rd. A castmate and I took an Australian crew there last year when they first landed in Tāmaki, so it has since left its special mark. The food is delicious, I love that it’s made to share, and the atmosphere is that sweet blend of intimacy and lively tucked in the corner of St Kevins Arcade.

The place to take a visitor to?

The Waitākere ranges - every time. Whatipū Beach is a hidden gem. It isn’t the safest for swimming, but it has caves and some of the best coastal walks to explore. There is a spooky lighthouse perched on top of one of the main rock formations that is giving a Paul Jennings’ vibe. Niche book reference, but if you know, you know.

Spot to finish a night out?

Karaoke in our living room. You know it’s been a good night.

Best coffee?

Gray’s on Dominion Rd. The whole experience there; community at the centre, the best coffee and cheese rolls you’ll find, art and homemade goods for sale from a range of local artists, and then Gray’s Vintage downstairs; really thoughtfully curated, and affordable vintage clothing.

Fish-and-chip shop?

Slightly more formal than your classic - but to share with a couple of friends, the seafood platter from Tony’s on Wellesley St. Tony’s has supported so many artists over the years, including myself in the day. Never forget singing those happy birthday desserts.

Hiking trail?

If we are talking in the burbs - but perhaps more of a stroll - Mount Albert Domain. You must love dogs though. You will meet many.

Venue for a gig?

Basement Theatre on Lower Greys Ave - where so many of our country’s theatre makers cut their teeth, and always return with the goods. Truly tucked in the heart of the city where it belongs. They just hosted a fantastic Pride season and Comedy Fest is on the horizon - all of May. I had my Actors’ Program graduation showcase there in 2020 and I feel lucky to have worked there in many capacities since, and still perform there often in premier works.

Place to find a bargain?

A $5 Academy Cinemas Wednesday. You can get a ticket, a popcorn and a drink for around $15. Right! In this economy! Their curation of programming the classics is always on. They also screen and host Q&A’s for local films regularly and present independent film festivals throughout the year, which my film friends and I always carve out in our calendar. A must-see right now is Taratoa Stappards Māori Gothic film Mārama, a really important and exciting addition to the Aotearoa film canon.

Brit O’Rourke stars in Helen Clark in Six Outfits, a play written by Fiona Samuel MNZM (Pike River), that retraces the remarkable trajectory of a farm girl from the Waikato who went on to become New Zealand’s first elected female Prime Minister and a powerful force at the United Nations. The play will be at the ASB Waterfront Theatre from April 7 to April 26.
