Despite struggles to hit a steady tone throughout, there are positives about this romantic survival story; it stars the ever-watchable Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, contains breathtaking moments of action, reminds us love can be found the oddest of places, and it has scenery to die for.
Although dying is
exactly what Ben and Alice don't want to do after surviving a small plane crash on top of a mountain range.
Cautious surgeon Ben (Elba) and free spirited photo-journalist Alice (Winslet) must decide whether to stay with the plane or journey through harsh winter conditions to find help. It doesn't help that Alice's leg has been hurt and they have little food - well, there's the dead pilot's dog, who also survives, but it would be unpalatable to chow down on man's best friend.
What follows is a drawn-out journey that could have moved through life-threatening experiences with greater efficiency. The leisurely pace does however allow the strangers to get to know each other, contemplate their mortality and discuss their fears.
The melodramatic title suits this film. What begins as a straight-up survival story snowballs into a cheesy romantic drama - although to be fair to Winslet and Elba, they do their best with the material on offer and there's a nice chemistry between them.
