Mike Puru broke down in tears as he farewelled listeners and colleagues on air this morning, after 21 years with The Edge radio station.

Broadcasting from a studio packed with fellow co-workers, Puru struggled to keep his emotions in check as he said goodbye.

Co-host Dominic Harvey didn't miss the opportunity to tease Puru, digging out an old recording of Puru's first voice break on The Edge, in which he introduced a new song from the band Take That.

"For 20 years I've been part of this station and it's an incredible place to be," said Puru before he broke down in tears.

"I've had an amazing time here, I've learnt so much, I've travelled the world and I've met some amazing people as well.

"When you come from Gore and you end up in the North Island, you guys have been my family."

He thanked his co-hosts Jay-Jay and Dom, describing them as "my best friends" and wished their new co-host luck on the journey ahead.

Clinton Randell will take over as the pair's new co-host, moving across from Mai FM.

Puru said he is now planning to take a break for a couple of months, before hosting The Bachelor NZ next year and then deciding what to do next.
