The third instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean might be nearly three hours long but that didn't detour the masses from going to see it.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End took just over $2 million in the four days after opening last Thursday, making it the
sixth highest on the box office list behind the three The Lord of the Rings films, Shrek 2, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Number one is Lord of Rings: Return of the King with takings of $2.6 million.
In comparison Spiderman 3 recently took $1.4 million in its first week at the box office.
Internationally, Pirates claimed the biggest opening in history by grossing US$401 million ($552 million) in its first six days which surpasses the previous record of US$382 million set by Spiderman 3.
In New Zealand it is expected that Shrek the Third, which opens in a week, will eclipse the latest Pirates.
