Martin Devlin just saved Mike Hosking's life

Mike Hosking says he nearly died after choking on a piece of pineapple.

Mike Hosking says he nearly died this morning after choking on a piece of pineapple during a break from his radio hosting duties.

Hosking, who hosts Newstalk ZB's Breakfast show from 6-8.30am, told listeners "my life almost ended" when the pineapple became lodged in his throat.

"There I was sitting down in the newsbreak. Suddenly I find myself with a piece of pineapple in a place it wasn't supposed to be," Hosking said.

"I'm choking for the first time in my life."

Hosking said he was chatting to Radio Sport host Martin Devlin at the time, but claimed Devlin was slow to pick up on how serious the situation had become.

"You were very slow to pick up on what was happening to me. I'm standing there with the pineapple in my throat. I'm trying to explain to you that (your) story can't go on and I'm dying ... I can't breathe ... there was some convulsing going on."

Devlin told listeners he "slapped Hosking on the back several times" to dislodge the "pulpy" pineapple. He joked that he deserved Hosking's Ferrari as reward.

Hosking: "You did save my life, I am eternally grateful."
