Madonna slams Universal's planned biopic about her burgeoning music career

Pop singer Madonna has slammed a planned biopic about the early days of her career, saying only she is able to tell her story.

Universal on Monday won an auction to produce the screenplay Blonde Ambition about the pop icon's life in New York during the early 1980s but Madonna appears unimpressed.

"Nobody knows what I know and what I have seen," she said in an Instagram post on Tuesday.

"Only I can tell my story. Anyone else who tries is a charlatan and a fool looking for instant gratification without doing the work."

Blonde Ambition follows Madonna as she tries to release her debut album while navigating fame, romance and the dismissive attitude of the music industry.

Written by Elyse Hollander, it was voted the most-liked unproduced screenplay in Hollywood on the annual 2016 Black List.

Michael De Luca, who produced the Fifty Shades franchise, is set to produce the film.

Madonna could make life difficult for the film's producers by blocking use of her music in the unauthorised biopic.

Her early recordings were released by Sire Records, an imprint of Warner Music.

Madonna broke out in 1983 with her self-titled debut album followed by 1984's blockbuster Like a Virgin.

Universal had no response.
