"My friends all tease me. We'll go out and get food, and without fail one of them will say, really loud, 'Oh my god! Is that Lorde?' It's so horrible, but they're great."
The 18-year-old says that her mother stops her from letting all the acclaim and attention go to her head.
She's achieved worldwide global pop success since the release of her debut album Pure Heroine last year but she still travels everywhere with her mum, poet Sonja Yelich, and she puts a stop to any histrionics straight away.
She revealed: "I live at home, in my childhood bedroom. I travel with my mum and if I were to ever say anything a little bit diva-esque, she'd knock it right down."
Lorde is expected to appear at the New Zealand Music Awards tonight, where she is up for several Tuis including Single of the Year and Album of the Year.
