The band toured in 2011 in support of their latest album, Future Primitive, and at the time Nicholls told AAP he was ready for life on the road.
"I know what to do and what to avoid and when to compromise," he said.
"Maybe I've just become a bit more mature and realised you can't be a brat the whole time."
He also joked that if it became too much for him he'd "just have a mental breakdown," before quickly correcting himself.
"No I won't do that. Not any more."
Nicholls also said at the time he'd kicked his marijuana habit.
Sony Music declined to comment on Nicholls' personal life but confirmed The Vines are still on their roster and are working on their sixth album.
