"If there's any musical justice, Kimbra's third studio album should be the one that finally catapults the New Zealander to the acclaim she deserves," writes Associated Press critic Mark Kennedy.
Kennedy goes on to praise her "impressive range, from glistening techno-pop to string-and-piano-fed torch songs to even a world beat-driven club banger".
Cryptic Rock also praised Kimbra's versitility across the album.
"Kimbra is one of those rare artists who does not give a flying squirrel about genre: on Primal Heart, she crosses back and forth without a care to craft songs that are cohesive and yet display her beautiful versatility," writes critic Jeannie Blue.
And in a four-star review, Beat.com.au praise it as "a sweet, psychedelic daydream".
Primal Heart is out on Friday.
