"I am a massive fan of the show and I had read all the books years before the beginning [of the TV show] ."
Castle-Hughes had her work cut out applying for the role, having to "convince the show runners that I could pull [it] off".
"I am using muscles in my body that I didn't even know I had. In the books Obara is described as big and brutish [whereas] I am quite small.
"I did a bunch of martial arts training and it was really exciting, and really different, but it is like a nice skill to have.
"I don't know when I will ever have to wield a spear in real life."
The actress first came to stardom at 13 in 2003 when she starred in Whale Rider.
Juggling acting and being a mother and wife is sometimes difficult, Castle-Hughes said, but she and daughter Felicity "make it work".
"It is like anything. It is a hard balance to try and figure it out but it is no different to any working mother in the world," she said.
The actress is now working on Roadies, a TV show written and directed by Cameron Crowe, playing the role of a sound engineer. The series also stars Christina Hendricks, Luke Wilson and Imogen Poots.
