"The left shark was playing up the more goofy, fun-spirited sports fan mascot type, who was just happy to be at the Super Bowl."
The revelation that Left Shark may have been acting intentionally hopeless may shock his online supporters, many of whom had elevated him as a symbol for accepting life's failure.
But, there's no sign yet of his legendary status declining, with #leftshark the second highest trending hashtag in the US.
"You might be a #leftshark or a #rightshark, but there's no such thing as a #wrongshark!" @SharkWeek said.
"We all have been #leftshark at one point in our life. Some of us are #leftshark more than once," @Gobberslob said.
The men behind the dynamic duo have been revealed as longtime Perry dancers Bryan Gaw and Scott Myrick.
Right Shark Myrick, who has previously danced for the singer as a gingerbread man and a giant purple cat named Kitty Purry, said he could see little from behind the shark suit.
"The visibility was ... terrible. I ran into a palm tree but the camera missed it," he said on Reddit.
Gaw confirmed on social media that he was the other shark but has otherwise remained relatively quiet.
There's no word yet on a man named Garret who had claimed Perry sharkdom to pick up on Tinder.
