Griffin, an Oak Park, Illinois native, has a tragic family past with cancer, as she lost her brother Gary, 63, three years ago in the wake of a what she called 'a brutal struggle' with esophageal cancer in an Instagram post memorializing her lost sibling.
Griffin hasn't spoken publicly about her sister's fight with cancer. She does have five siblings, including Joyce. In a Wall Street Journal interview in 2015, she shared that the two shared a room growing up.
The My Life on the D-List personality has kept a low profile this summer amid the controversy that erupted in May when she posed in an artsy photo holding a severed head resembling Donald Trump.
The Emmy-winning comic on Friday said that a probe by Secret Service has wrapped up amid the graphic political statement against the president, which was snapped by photographer Tyler Shields.
She wrote on Twitter: 'I am no longer under federal investigation. The case is closed, I have been completely exonerated. Finally.'
Amid the backlash when the photo was published, Griffin lost a New Year's Eve gig with CNN, and a scolding from the commander-in-chief.
'Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself,' Trump tweeted. 'My children, especially my 11 year old son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!'
Griffin subsequently apologized for the tweet, saying she 'was wrong' and 'went too far' with the imagery, which she said stemmed from Trump's previous jabs involving blood aimed at journalist Megyn Kelly.
Griffin last month said in a news conference that the scandal had done significant damage to her professionally.
'I don't think I will have a career after this,' she said. 'I'm going to be honest, [Trump] broke me.'
