Kim Kardashian is filing for divorce today after just 72 days of marriage - but her husband, basketball star Kris Humphries, says he wants her back.

The 31-year-old reality TV star married Humphries in a lavish televised ceremony in August but after rampant speculation their relationship was in trouble, Kardashian released a statement confirming the news.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage, I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision," she said.

"I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best."

But Humphries told TMZ.com he was "committed to this marriage and everything this covenant represents.

"I love my wife and am devastated to learn she filed for divorce ... I'm willing to do whatever it takes to make it work," he said.

Kardashian's family are "sticking together" following the announcement of the split.

Her sister Kourtney has revealed those closest to her are all rallying round to give her support.

She wrote on Twitter: "Our sister is going through a difficult time but we're a close family and are sticking together like always.

"We appreciate everyone's kindness and support. Kim, we love you."

Fellow sibling Khloe hit out at those who had been "hurtful" about the proceedings but said her family are "strong" enough to survive the ordeal.

She said: "Reading some of these comments r so hurtful. Im grateful 4our fans who understand and r being respectful. Hate is disgusting. Love is everything.

Earlier, Keeping Up with the Kardashians producer Ryan Seacrest confirmed a divorce was imminent.

He wrote on Twitter: "Yes @kimkardashian is filing for divorce this morning. I touched base with her, getting a statement in just a few mins (sic)."

Seacrest later told People.com: "I've spoken to her briefly and she says she's sad and got caught up in all that was going on."

Kardashian - who attended a Halloween party in New York over the weekend but did not bring Humphries along - has reportedly hired divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, who has previously represented Britney Spears, Maria Shriver, Angelina Jolie and Ryan Reynolds and will cite "irreconcilable differences" in her divorce papers.

She is expected in Australia tomorrow morning with her sister Khloe for the Melbourne Cup.

A Qantas spokesman said Kardashian was still scheduled to fly out of Los Angeles on Monday night LA time.

"She will be travelling tonight and will be arriving tomorrow morning," he told the Nine Network.

She is due to launch her handbag line in Sydney on Wednesday.

Kardashian once dated Australian bodyguard Shengo Deane, and the pair were filmed in bed together for the reality show Kourtney And Kim Take New York.

Sources close to the pair told website TMZ that their arguments over where to live were responsible for the breakdown of the union, with Humphries wanting to live in Minnesota while Kardashian didn't want to leave Los Angeles.

Although this has been a source of tension for some time, they decided to try to figure it out after the wedding because they were so caught up with being in love.

Kardashian has previously revealed her marriage to 26-year-old Humphries wasn't ideal because of the publicity surrounding their union and said they were finding it hard to get some alone time.

She said: "It's not been ideal because you're newlyweds and you want privacy."

Kim and Kris tied the knot in a fairytale ceremony in front of 440 guests in Montecito, California with her sisters Khloe and Kourtney as matron and maid of honour, and her nephew, 23-month old Mason, as ring bearer.

The lavish August 20 wedding at a private estate near Santa Barbara, California, was filmed for a two-part special on E!

The divorce, if finalised, would be Kardashian's second. Humphries last played as a forward for the New Jersey Nets.

Meanwhile, the man who married Kardashian and Humphries wants them to stop their divorce.

Pastor Joel Johnson - who officiated the couple's wedding ceremony on August 20 - would like to sit down and talk with the pair as he is upset by the decision.

He told HollywoodLife.com: "I'm sad to hear this. Why would Kim do this? I would love to connect with Kim and try to pull the reigns back and redirect this energy in a more redemptive way."

Joel, who is Humphries' Pastor from childhood, spent time with the couple prior to their ceremony and he reveals he thought their feelings for each other were "genuine".

He said: "I've known Kris a long time and gone into some deep places with him. I felt really good about the meeting. I felt what I experienced was genuine. I feel for both of them. I think two of the hardest things to deal with are wealth and fame and they have both. I knew it would be a challenging one for them.

"So many people condemned the wedding before it happened saying it wouldn't last. But when I spoke to Kris, I knew where his heart was and I said I wanted to meet Kim personally. I was totally impressed with Kim."
