"The notion inherent in this is for us to try and imagine what the world will be like in 100 years," Malkovich says in a trailer for the film.
Robert Rodriguez (Sin City, Grindhouse) will direct the sci-fi film, coming on board for the opportunity to do something the likes of which has never been done before.
"I was intrigued by the concept of working on a film that nobody would ever see in my lifetime. I wanted it to be a work of art that is enjoyed in 100 years," he says in the trailer.
The film comes with the hashtag #notcomingsoon, and for now, the plot remains unclear.
In a statement, Thierry Fremaux, general delegate of Cannes Film Festival, praised the film as "an innovative cinematographic project" which he hoped would be considered for Cannes in 2116.
