Jennifer Lopez has broken her silence over a mystery people have been trying to crack for over a week.

Who was the creepy floating face in the background of her latest gym selfie?

The 50-year-old singer appeared via video call on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon this week, days after she inadvertently freaked out fans who spotted a "scary man" with his hand over his mouth lurking in the back of her Instagram photo.

Laughing about the eerie detail in her sweaty snap, the star revealed it was nothing of the sort – and just a real estate agent her fiance, Alex Rodriguez, was talking to on Zoom on the other side of their gym window.

Telling the host the accidental photobomb was due to their gym set up and where they have one of their laptops perched for Zoom chats, she went on to say she doesn't know exactly who her fiance was talking to, or why he had his hand over his mouth.

"That was a Zoom!" Lopez explained.

"So where we have the Zoom set up (is) right by our garage," she said, adding that she has a wall of mirrors in her informal home gym for her dance rehearsals.

"I don't know what he was doing," JLo said in response to why the man's hand over his mouth. "Sneezing or coughing."

How's that for bizarre timing?

When the star shared the selfie in question with her 122 million followers earlier this month, terrified fans flocked to the comments to point out the mysterious figure.

"Urm, who or what's behind you?" one asked.

"Can anyone else see the scary guy in the mask behind her?" another said.

"Why is there a dude with his mouth covered in the background?" someone else wrote.

The two pictures in the post – which show Lopez posing in her gym wearing a camouflage-patterned crop top and matching leggings – were posted with the caption:

"If it doesn't challenge you, it doesn't change you," Lopez wrote in the caption.

Earlier this year JLo stunned fans with her halftime performance at the Superbowl alongside Shakira.

The duo showing off some serious dance moves – and toned figures – as they sung a medley of their hit songs.

Lopez's most recent silver screen appearance saw her play a stripper in Hustlers, with the star taking pole dancing lessons on top of her regular gym workout.

JLo also changed her diet for the role, revealing she gave up carbs and sugar, however, admits the change was gruelling.

"(The challenge) was really hard. Not only do you get a headache, but you feel like you're in an alternate reality or universe. Like, you don't feel like yourself. You realise that you're addicted to sugar," JLo told Ellen DeGeneres of preparing the role for which she earned a Golden Globe nomination.

Lopez is no stranger to sharing sweaty gym selfies of her six pack on Instagram and has credited daily workouts with keeping her happy – and ripped.

"Very rarely will I skip my workout," she told Us Weekly.

"Sometimes, I work too late the night before, and I'm like, 'Ugh, I can't do this.' But I tell myself, 'Just do it. It's only an hour.' It's just talking yourself off the ledge of being a lazy bum."
