It's been a while since a dance act made as much noise outside the club as say, Soulwax but Simian Mobile Disco are getting there.
The English production/remix duo are better known for their studio work for the Arctic Monkeys and the Klaxons than their dance tracks. Theyalso "robbed" Kanye at the MTV Awards. Well sort of - Justice won for his remix of their track We Are Your Friends from their days as a dodgy indie rock band.
Simian's debut album is evidence their indie leanings occasionally outweigh their agenda to get dancefloors pumping, whether it's the punk attitude in the vocals, the oh-so-European electro-clash grooves or the sly references - It's the Beat has echoes of Technotronic's Pump Up the Jam.
Add to that the crashing, icy effects and robotic, Daft Punk-style vocals and it's dance music with a little more substance than you're likely to find at 5am on K Rd, anyway.
But it's too cheap and cheerful fun to take too seriously. Especially given the short, poppy tracks, the deadpan simplicity of the lyrics and the air-punching beats.
Sometimes you're left with nothing but empty electronica. But tracks like Hustler, with its itchy-scratchy groove, and the Orbital-style Wooden will either revive your love for old-fashioned dance tunes or remind you to get out the old computer games.
Label: Wichita/Shock
Verdict: One for the new-ravers, indie kids and acid freaks
