While the rest of the world might compare Field Music to the Beach Boys after shacking up with Queen, it's hard not to think of the Finn brothers singing together in their Split Enz days when you hear the Brewis brothers (David and Peter) chiming in together. Plusthere's more than a few weird and wonky instrumental moments from the British trio, also made up of keyboard manipulator, Andrew Moore, on Tones Of Town that recalls Enz tracks like My Mistake or Late Last Night.
This is Field Music's second - almost perfect - pop album and you better listen up because it's all over in a short 30-minute blast. It's not throwaway chart-topping pop. This is the kind of pop music that can be majestic, playful and joyous, all in one.
Opener, Give It Lose It Take It, starts off with angular rock'n'roll jabs and morphs into a trance inducing 70s vibe, and then there's the Freddie Mercury vocal harmonies on A Gap Has Appeared that leads straight into the crazy violins of Closer At Hand.
For all its madcap layers, rhythmical changes, and vast array of instruments, it's beautifully put together and there's no wastage. For fans of bands like Arcade Fire, Field Music is a must.
Label: Mi/Shock
Verdict: That new field music sounds pretty damn good
