The good people of Wellington, especially those in the capital's music community, might roll their eyes, but if ever there was music that typified the "Wellington sound" then singer/songwriter Adi Dick's debut album, Our Place, is the latest example of it.
Our Place mooches and meanders along withan even smoother and more laid-back vibe than the Black Seeds, and while it has less of a bass-heavy groove than Fat Freddy's Drop, it's in the same vein. In fact, the six-minute opening track, Get Out, has a two-minute outro that strolls along, winding over and over in that trademark Freddy's style.
Then there's a song like Beautiful View which is frustrating, because Dick comes up with funny lines like "I put the jug on, and put my two tone trackies on, and anybody that has seen them will know what I mean", but much of the track is like a weather forecast.
There's some catchy and intriguing tunes, like I Will Not Go, the sweet and swooning Sunshine, and the mantra-like title track.
It's perfect for the summer months at the beach, but how many albums like that are out there? While the songs are beautifully put together, you get the feeling you've heard some of them somewhere before.
Label: Loop
Verdict: More music for the beach coming straight out of Wellington
