Hugh Laurie has admitted he experimented with strong painkillers.
The British actor, who plays Vicodin addict Dr. Gregory House in hit US TV show House, claims he tried the drug so he could understand his character better.
Hugh said: "I wouldn't recommend it - we have to becareful. But then again if you're not in pain it gives a floaty, pleasurable feeling."
The 48-year-old star, who is known for being a perfectionist, admits he can't bear to watch House because his American accent sounds "retarded".
Hugh added to Britain's Radio Times magazine: "I don't watch regularly. I avert my eyes when my children have it on. I hate seeing myself, but it's even worse hearing my American accent. I had no idea I sound so retarded, a dull monotone, full of clunking mistakes.
"I'm hugely surprised House survives. The odds are against you in this competitive business - wolves snap at your heels. It's hard to say if I'm pleased with the show."
Hugh also hit back at claims he has "sold out" by leaving the UK to pursue a career in the US.
He said: "There's a notion that I've sold out. Sold out what exactly? There's a peculiar British attitude that I took an oath I wouldn't be successful, and reneged on it."
