Gotham star's gruesome on-set head injury

Ben McKenzie has been taken to hospital after he sustained a head injury on Friday, while working on the set of drama series Gotham.

The 36-year-old actor shared several images on Instagram of himself in hospital.

In one of the pictures he has a deep gash on the side of his head accompanied by the caption "Holy concrete wall, Batman! #gotham", referencing the 60s'Batman series starring Adam West as the Caped Crusader.

McKenzie said that he suffered the injury after a fight sequence went wrong and he smashed into a concrete wall.

"Happy Birthday to me. Fight sequence gone awry. Don't ram your head into concrete pillars kids," he posted on the social media site, along with a photo of his head with a large plaster on it.

In another photo, a doctor is putting the finishing touches to McKenzie's stitches after sewing the cut back together.

"Doc Sherman at New York-Presbyterian, you are a career saver. Thanks for stitching me up nice," he wrote.

The Southland and OC star is recovering well and will be back to work on Monday.

McKenzie plays James Gordon, a new police recruit to the Gotham City Police Department, who fights crime in the pre-Batman city and solves cases, including the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

The highly anticipated Fox drama series is based on characters from the DC Comics featuring the detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne.

The series creator, Bruno Heller, has already confirmed that the Dark Knight will not be making an appearance in the show.

Gotham is coming soon to New Zealand screens and will be aired on TV2.
