GoT director keen to join Black Widow film

In case Marvel Studios need another reason to make a Black Widow film, Game of Thrones director Neil Marshall is keen to take the reins.

The Descent and Centurion director, who also has helmed episodes of the wildly popular HBO series Game of Thrones, told Vanity Fair he would love to tackle a movie on the crimson-haired heroine.

"I think I'd like to do a big movie with a strong female lead, whether or not she would be a superhero," he said.

"I would love to do a Black Widow movie."

Marshall explained that Scarlett Johansson's character - next seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron - is interesting because unlike Captain America or The Hulk, she doesn't have any superpowers.

"She just has extraordinary skills, and the world that she comes from, being this ex-K.G.B. assassin, I find that really fascinating," he said, adding that he actually finds it hard to relate to heroes with powers.

"Very rarely do they get killed off, and when they do get killed off, chances are they're going to be back somehow."

If Marshall were to join the project, it wouldn't be the first time a Game of Thrones director ventured into the Marvel universe - Thor sequel The Dark World was helmed by GoT director Alan Taylor.

Also Johansson proved female-driven action flicks sell, when Lucy topped the US and Aussie box office when it released this year, beating Dwayne Johnson's Hercules.

However, it would appear a solo Black Widow movie is still a while off yet.

While in the past Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said it was in development, but most recently, said he hoped they would have a female-driven flick "sooner rather than later".

There's also the glaringly obvious fact that Johansson is pregnant.

For the moment, fans will just have to wait with bated breath for the Avengers sequel next year to see to see Black Widow kick some more butt.

By that stage, fingers crossed there will be more word on a stand-alone film for the heroine.
