Many Golden Globes stars walked today's red carpet with activists as their dates. One pair bought viewers to tears.
In a movement spearheaded by Michelle Williams, seven other actresses including Meryl Streep, Amy Poehler, Emma Watson walked gender and racial justice activists as their guests at the star-studded awards ceremonyin an effort to give them a platform for their messages.
Streep attended with Ai-jen Poo, the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance; Williams with Tarana Burke, the founder of the "me too" movement; and Watson with Marai Larasi, the executive director of Imkaan, a black-feminist organization.
But Williams and Burke made the biggest impact during their joint interview with Ryan Seacrest.
Introducing Burke, Williams said: "Really, the most exciting thing is I thought I'd have to raise my daughter to learn to protect herself in a dangerous world".
She add that "because of Tarana" she had more hope for the future.
She said: "We have the opportunity to hand our children a different world."
Many, including Kiwi actress Melanie Lynskey, took to Twitter to say the interview had them in tears.
I cried during the Michelle Williams/Tarana Burke interview. I didn’t know how much I needed to see women talking about things that matter in this setting
on a verrrrrrry different note, i actually had tears in my eyes listening to the great @TaranaBurke and Michelle Williams talking about building a better world for women and girls on the #GoldenGlobes red carpet
Watson gave the spotlight to her date Marai Larasi, who praised the actress' efforts.
She said: "There's something about women in Hollywood speaking out. There is a wall of silence…and every time someone speaks out it creates a bit of a crack in that wall.
"Women in Hollywood have an opportunity to amplify the issues and shine a light on things. It is a critical moment, there's this fantastic platform and we're trying to use it in the best way we can."
Today's Golden Globes ceremony kicks off at 2pm by host Seth Myers.
