George Clooney stars in Disney's mystery adventure, Tomorrowland, due in cinemas in May.
Tomorrowland, starring George Clooney, is one of the worst flops of the year and is set to cost Disney Studios between US$120 million and US$140 million (NZ$170.95 million - NZ$199.44 million), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The production, which released in New Zealand on May 21, has earned NZ$717,191 domesticallyso far, making it the fourth most popular film at the domestic box office this week, but has made just US$170.8 million globally, according to Box Office Mojo.
It is not expected to cross US$200 million in collections, after Disney spent US$180 million on producing it. Disney also pumped US$150 million in marketing the film.
Tomorrowland joins other big-budget duds by Disney including Lone Ranger that lost US$190 million in 2013 and John Carter that lost US$200 million the year before.
Other big-budget flops this year include Jupiter Ascending and Seventh Son.
On the bright side, however, Disney witnessed some major hits in Avengers: Age of Ultron, that earned nearly US$1.35 billion worldwide, and Cindrella, that has raked in over US$500 million.
