George Clooney and Brad Bird team up for Tomorrowland

For George Clooney every "second that ticks by the future is running out".

At least according to his character in Disney's Tomorrowland, where he plays a former boy-genius on a mission to save the world.

The 53-year-old talks prophetically about the end of the world in the new trailer for the film released on Monday.

In the clip a young woman Casey Newton (Britt Robertson) discovers a pin that magically transports her to another world.

She eventually traces it back to Clooney, where she learns that the world will end and the only person who can stop it is her.

The highly secretive plot revolves around Clooney, a former boy-genius, who helps a teen girl on a mission to discover a far-off location.

It's storyline centres around lead character Casey, who is transported to a faraway land when she touches a magical totem.

She seeks out the help of Frank Walker (Clooney), a genius inventor who shies away from society, in order to unlock the mysteries of the secret world.

The film is being helmed by Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol director Brad Bird and produced by Damon Lindelof, best known for Lost and Star Trek.

Bird previously spoke to USA Today about the movie's lead characters, stating, "she's young, fresh and outgoing - he's closed up".

"His house, you can't see in any of the windows. It's like a guy who's saying 'Go away!'.

"When she turns the tables on him, underneath about six layers of (mad) older guy who doesn't want to be bothered is a little bit of respect."

Disney's latest project is inspired by the theme park attraction of the same name, which showcased a futuristic vision of the world when it first opened in the California park in 1955.

Tomorrowland is due to hit cinemas in May.
