FX to make Sons of Anarchy spin-off about The Mayans

A script for a Sons of Anarchy spin-off has officially entered into development.

Sons creator Kurt Sutter will head Mayans MC, which will follow recurring motorcycle club The Mayans from the original series, E! News reports.

The FX network describes the spin-off as "a dark, visceral family drama that takes a new look at the most American of icons, the 1 per cent outlaw, this time reflected through a Latino lens".

Mayans MC co-creator Elgin James will write the pilot episode, having been brought on board by Sutter, who "wanted to find a strong, unique Latino voice".

"Because I didn't think a white guy from Jersey should be writing about Latin culture and traditions. Elgin is that voice," Sutter says.

Sons of Anarchy started in 2008 and ran for seven seasons, becoming the network's most popular drama, even now, two years after wrapping.
