Get out and about this weekend and check out some local art works across Auckland.
1. Finn Ferrier Artists' Walk
Sunday, 2pm. Meet at Emily Place Reserve.
One of the last visual art events of the Arts Festival, artist Finn Ferrier takes you through his city with the eyes of a collector, picking up rocks and tracing their genealogy in a stroll through moments
of the wider city's history. Hovering between the factual and the romantic, he encourages walkers to experience the city as a landscape strewn with clues to its past, from stones to details of street design and landscaping.
2. Shopfront
Saturday, 2pm-8pm, Station Square, cnr Broadway and Remuera Rd
A combination of video screenings, installations, a flower-arranging workshop and a chance to bring along your own flowers and foliage, or take away a cutting for your garden. This is an alternative gardening event about the relationships between flowers and people, with space for conversation as well as display.
3. Bledisloe Walkway Light Boxes
Until April 28, opposite the Imax Theatre back stairs, beside the Bledisloe Post Office, central city.
Crossings is a mesmerising work by Melbourne-based New Zealander Daniel Crooks, who turned his camera on to the flow of pre-Christmas foot-traffic asking viewers to think about the nature of public space and how people move and interact within it. Walk on through to Aotea Square to soak up the last of the Festival Garden atmosphere.
4. Nga Hau e Wha - The Four Winds, by Leilani Kake
Saturday 8am-2pm. Fresh Gallery, Otara (in the Otara Mall courtyard).
Check out the famous Otara Markets then see this stunning piece of contemporary art, a work from Manukau-based Leilani Kake investigating the cultural taboos of nudity and body perception for Maori and Pacific Island women.
5. About Face
Until April 2, Papakura Art Gallery, 10 Averill St, Papakura, phone (09) 297 7510.
An exhibition of portraiture and rendering of the face is a fitting exhibition for the newly face-lifted Papakura Art Gallery, showing works by Martin Ball, Octavia Cook, Jacqueline Fahey, Joanna Fieldes, Gavin Hurley, Damien Kurth, Mary McIntyre, Sam Mitchell, Zarahn Southon, Sally Tagg, Ann Verdcourt, Haihui Wang and Tracey Williams.
