It's official: Fifty Shades of Grey has become New Zealand's highest-grossing R18 film.
New figures released today show the raunchy flick has made $2.62 million in box office takings locally, overtaking the previous record-holder Wolf of Wall Street with $2.59m.
Other films in the top 10 include Quentin Tarantino's ultra-violent
Pulp Fiction, Sharon Stone's turn in the erotic thriller Basic Instinct, and drug-fuelled romp Trainspotting.
Based on the bestseller by EL James, Fifty Shades has broken box office records around the world - despite being slammed for infrequent sex scenes, a lack of chemistry between the leads, and its poor story line.
It has already nabbed the record for the biggest ever opening for an R18-rated film in New Zealand.
